Season's Favorite Nutcracker Uplifts Holiday Season December 9 to 18, 2011
Central West Ballet returned with its annual production of The Nutcracker at the Gallo Center for the Arts. Artistic Director René Daveluy refreshed some choreography throughout the show, improving on corps work and fleshing out certain lead parts. Although a number of enhancements still need to be made, both on the dance and theatrical scenery sides, Daveluy's vision of The Nutcracker is becoming clearly defined. Looking at the latest efforts, this production of the holiday favorite could become a standard by which other versions are judged against. The addition of refurbished costumes by Kirsten Raven-Asturi and Lillis Handford and new props by Daveluy went a good way to give the production a new look despite obvious budget restrictions.
Refurbished Snowflake Corps de Ballet tutus gave the Snow Scene more consistency with excellent results. Daveluy's new Mouse Heads and reworked battle scene provided additional excitement.
The cast of nearly two hundred performers were at their most inspired yet, with a lot of colorful personalities surfacing during the two week run at the Gallo Center. Annual guest artist Paul Tischer gave what was his best performance to date. Tischer, who has been incarnating the role of Drosselmeyer for more than a decade, gave his interpretation more detail and enthusiasm. A special guest appearance in the role Mother Ginger was performed with charisma by Marilyn Rowland. A note of appreciation has to go to John Fowler, also a regular performer in the yearly production, as a Party Scene Parent. Fowler's tasteful presence complimented the scene.
Children from Juline • School of Dance, and other local dance schools, were animated on stage and provided many wonderful moments. As Clara, both Megan Purl and Delaney Medina were enthusiastic and brought a genuine feel to their character. Blake Marker and Brian Ebster were outstanding as Fritz, Clara's mischievous brother.
The appearance of dancers from the Juline Regional Youth Ballet also gave the production a solid support and distinct energy. In updated Angels and Arabian sections, Juline Regional Youth Ballet dancers showed good technical and movement qualities.
